A high level of homocysteine in circulation is an independent risk factor for the development of disability and death from cardiovascular disease (CVD) including stroke. CVD risk increases proportionately by 6 to 7% with every 1 µmol/L increase in blood homocysteine. Elevated blood homocysteine is also thought to relate to onset of diseases of the brain and kidneys and to diabetic complications.
